HOF 2010 – Distinguished Service
After graduating from both Redfield High School and Dakota Wesleyan University, Cy became a teacher and coach for the Aberdeen Schools in 1930.
Cy became head basketball coach in 1932 and coached until 1943. During his tenure his record was 130 wins and 74 losses. His teams won the ESD once and the state twice! Each year there is a “Cy Holgate Memorial Award in Athletics” given to a CHS athlete.
In 1943 Cy became principal of Central High School and in 1957 he became superintendent of schools until his retirement in 1970.
In 1971 the Holgate Junior High School opened, honoring Cy for his many years of service to the Aberdeen Public Schools and the community.
