Holgate placed 2nd at the Metropolitan Opera auditions in 1959. In 1969, he received the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in the Musical “1776.” He was the recipient of the New Jersey Drama Critics Award Best Actor in 1974. He earned a Tony Nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1979. He has appeared in 10 Broadway shows, starred in seven National Tours of Broadway shows, co-created and directed “Reunion,” a Civil War musical Off Broadway, starred in “Lend Me A Tenor” in London 1986, directed several productions around the country, and appeared in the film version of “1776”. In 1992, he was awarded the Detroit Critics Award for Best Actor.
